IMSH, aka, the International Meeting for Simulation in Healthcare,โ is hosted every year by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) in a major city of the United States. Dedicated to healthcare simulation research and learning, the event provides an opportunity for “Simulation Champions” from around the world to come together to network with peers, learn from experts, and see the latest medical simulators and simulation products. This HealthySimulation.com article by Founder/CEO Lance Baily BA, EMT-B, will explore how IMSH can meet attendees educational needs for professional development and opportunities to collaborate with other clinical simulationists.
Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH)
With over 5,000 members, SSH, aka The Society for Simulation in Healthcare, is the world’s largest organization dedicated to medical simulation. The purpose of SSH is to serve as a global community of practice to enhance the quality of healthcare. The nonprofit’s mission is to serve their members to foster education, professional development, and the advancement of research and innovation; promote the profession of healthcare simulation through standards and ethics; and champion healthcare simulation through advocacy, sharing, facilitating, and collaboration. SSH aims to reduce errors in patient care and enhance clinical performance through the use of simulation.
IMSH Attendance
The Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) hosts this event and offers over 250 sessions that encompass interactive and immersive courses and plenary sessions. The IMSH meeting is aligned with the SSHโs mission to โprovide hands-on learning in leading-edge medical simulation trends and technology, networking and collaboration.โ Furthermore, the programs are all peer-reviewed and are selected to serve the needs of novices to experts.
โOverall, SSH has members from 70 countries. Every year for IMSH, there are professionals from more than 60 countries attending IMSH,โ Trenell Crosky, Director of Continuing Education, SSH, said. Without question, IMSH has become the hallmark healthcare simulation education event. No other event in the world can match the incredible number of high-level sessions, learning labs, immersive courses, mainstage presentations, and other learning settings that drive IMSH, In addition to the unmatched education offerings, attendees will be able to level up their simulation game through networking with rockstar instructors, getting a big peek at the future of simulation tech, and scoring fresh ideas to take back to their programs.โ
IMSH Content Focus
At IMSH meetings, key areas of discussion are often new ideas, leadership development, new processes and research findings, innovative approaches, design strategies, return on investment, and improved communication techniques. IMSH Social Events and Networking
Each year, IMSH introduces new social events and networking opportunities, research initiatives (in-progress and complete), technology, and the SimVentors Technology Showcase (featuring the brightest ideas in healthcare simulation).IMSH offers attendees the opportunity to connect with simulationists from around the world to collaborate to advance healthcare simulation. IMSH offers their flagship social event and a highlight of the conference, the Annual Presidentโs Diamond Ball, where award winners, accredited programs, and certified individuals are recognized.
Other networking opportunities include the SimFit 5K Run/Walk/Roll for attendees to exercise their bodies in addition to their minds during the conference. There is an opening session to the exhibit hall that promotes the connection between simulationists and the vendors that create products used in healthcare simulation. Many of the vendors offer special networking opportunities for a Meet and Greet for collaboration.
In support of patient care improvements and professional development, the Society for Simulation in Healthcare is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to provide continuing education for the healthcare team. This activity was planned by and for the healthcare team, and learners will receive Interprofessional Continuing Education (IPCE) for Virtual IMSH attendees and earn IPCE credits for learning.
Abstract Submission and Registration
The Call for Abstracts typically occurs in the Spring and closes at the beginning of June. Registration for the next IMSH event always opens in the Fall, and individuals interested in joining the IMSH email list can register online. IMSH is a great opportunity to share your work in healthcare simulation and continue your professional development.
