• Hello everyone and welcome!

My name is Nate and I’m one of the moderators for this group. To get things kicked off, I thought I’d ask how you all got into nursing simulation. I know that when I went to nursing school, healthcare simulation was not on my radar at all! After over 15 years of serving in various nursing roles at a pediatric hospital, I found myself in the world of full time academia. One of my “other duties as assigned” was to “help with simulation”. I had no idea what that meant and my first full time academic year was 2019-2020, so it didn’t look “normal” for several years. However, each year the simulation portion of my job grew increasingly more interesting to me as I got a deeper understanding and appreciation for it. Now, it’s all I want to do and I’m trying to find ways to make it my full time job.

I’m guessing many of you have similar stories. I’m guessing very few of us set out with our end goal being nursing simulation. So, what was your journey like to get to this point? Where do you hope it will take you?

      • Hi everyone,

My transition into simulation was what I never knew I needed. Like Nate, simulation was not a thing when I was in nursing school unless you call giving an orange shot because that was the closest thing we had to “skin”. I was nursing faculty at a community college and the sim coordinator retired. My dean wanted me to take over the position with a vast nursing history and a degree in nursing informatics. I was very hesitant but agreed to try the position with the caveat that if I didn’t like it, I could return to teaching critical care. Eleven years later, I can’t imagine doing anything else. I now work at a large university and am dual-certified in simulation. My journey is continuous and revolves around networking and mentoring others.

        • @TChidume Thank you for sharing! Like you, I feel many of us may have been hesitant at first, but now can’t imagine our lives without simulation. Thank you for your input!

        • Hi all. I first started in the official sim world in 2010 when I entered academia. I was the lab coordinator at that time and learned from one of the best back then- Nancy Rogers. She mentored me in sim and I took over for her when she retired. I was able to attend MFAST I & II (Maryland Faculty Academy for Simulation & Training) with Pam Jeffries at Hopkins way back when and we had an active group (MCCSUN) begin @2010 which was a statewide group for sim educators to learn from each other. Then eventually I attended the sim leader program with NLN in 2018 and learned from Sue Forneris, Mary Fey, et al. who were AMAZING! My school also attended in person workshops with Kristina Dreifuerst at NLN for the DML debrief method. MD has a statewide consortium group (MCSRC) which has a train the trainer program which I was able to attend with more fabulous sim educators. Sim has been a wonderful world that I am constantly learning from! Can’t get enough! :)
