Surgical Sam from The Chamberlain Group is the world’s first high-fidelity, beating-heart, breathing, and bleeding pediatric surgical team trainer, developed through a pioneering collaboration between The Chamberlain Group and Boston Children’s Hospital Simulator Program (SIMPeds). Designed to replicate a 14-month-old infant, Surgical Sam enables realistic hands-on training for entire operating room teams, advancing pediatric surgical education far beyond what traditional mannequins can achieve.
The Pediatric Cardiothoracic Training Module features a lifelike beating heart with replaceable, cannulatable right atrium and aorta, a suturable IVC bleed site, recloseable sternum, and ventilation-compatible lungs. The heart offers multiple pre-programmed heart rates or can be synchronized to an external patient monitor for enhanced physiologic realism. Hemodynamic flow is supported throughout the thoracic cavity, while externally controlled bleed sites allow instructors to simulate hemorrhagic events with precision. A radial pulse can be activated via hand-held bulb or Pulse Controller to reinforce physiologic feedback during team exercises.
Trainer Includes: Surgical Sam Chassis, two units of incisable skin, Pediatric Cardiothoracic Module, retractable sternum, ventilatable lungs, beating heart, Beating Heart Controller with Pulse, shipping case, and a Quick Start Curriculum for Cardiothoracic Surgery developed by Boston Children’s Hospital.
Unlike static trainers, Surgical Sam enables teams to perform critical surgical steps from, sternotomy and cannulation to emergent resternotomy and bleed control, in a dynamic, realistic environment. Its modular system also supports a Pediatric General Surgery Module (#4096) for expanded training applications, allowing institutions to tailor sessions to their educational goals.
Validated through a multi-year study under the leadership of Dr. Peter Weinstock, MD, PhD, Director of SIMPeds, Surgical Sam has been repeatedly used in full OR simulations to improve performance, communication, and patient safety. By engaging every member of the care team, surgeons, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, and nurses, Surgical Sam bridges the gap between technical skill and coordinated clinical excellence, ultimately enhancing outcomes for the smallest and most vulnerable patients.
Surgical Sam truly moves the needle in pediatric surgical team training—bringing anatomy, physiology, and performance together in one transformative platform.
