Simulation-based experiences (SBE) have been a fundamental teaching modality in nursing and other healthcare professions for the past two decades, and their use continues to grow. The Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice (HSSOBP) define expectations for simulation educators. Despite the available wealth of information and training, nursing faculty who are new to simulation often struggle to understand and implement these best practice standards (Herlihy, 2022). Current training tends to focus more on defining and describing the best practices outlined in the standards, rather than on their application. This presentation emphasizes the application of HSSOBP: Simulation Design, providing a step-by-step roadmap for new simulationists when developing a simulation-based experience.
Although this webinar does not provide an in-depth review of HSSOBP Scenario Design, attendees will receive a simulation development workbook. The workbook includes a step-by-step guide that walks participants through the process of developing a scenario, detailing each stage. Self-evaluation, including knowledge gaps, can be identified while using the template, providing specifics about the need for further education in healthcare simulation design.

Dr. Beena Joseph is a Clinical Assistant Professor and Clinical Learning Coordinator at UH Gessner College of Nursing. She holds a BSN degree from Manipal Academy of Higher Education in India, an MSN in Nursing Education from the University of Houston-Victoria, Texas, and a DNP in Healthcare Systems Leadership from Chamberlain University in Illinois. Dr. Joseph is actively involved in teaching both undergraduate and graduate nursing programs, as well as in simulation education. She serves on various committees at the college and participates in interprofessional education initiatives alongside Nursing, Medicine, Social Work, Optometry, and Pharmacy at the University. In 2023, Dr. Joseph successfully led the team that achieved accreditation for the simulation centers at Gessner College of Nursing from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH). She has delivered numerous scholarly presentations locally, nationally, and internationally, and has contributed to several grant applications. Her recent podium presentations on simulation were featured at INACSL24 and INACSL25. Additionally, Dr. Joseph has extensive experience in project management and staff development. She played a crucial role in the launch of the first-time Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program in India in 2024. At the state level, she served as a Subject Matter Expert on the State of Texas Advisory Committee for Literacy Texas, where she contributed to validating frontline worker competencies as part of the “SAIC (Standards Alignment to Industry Clusters) Project Team” in Healthcare Science. Her research interests focus on simulation in clinical learning and interprofessional education.
Earline Moreland has more than 20 years in Simulation Education and is currently employed by the University of Houston College of Nursing in Houston Texas. Earline retired then returned to serve as Adjunct faculty supporting the Simulation Center. Her current interests are simulation research and advancing the science of simulation. She is currently pursuing her EdD in Educational Leadership.
