Abstract:

This CE webinar presentation from Elmhurst University explores the interdisciplinary development and implementation of a counseling-focused healthcare simulation for graduate speech-language pathology (SLP) students. Faculty from nursing and SLP collaborated to design a reflective simulation experience using both standardized patients and high-fidelity manikins to foster counseling competence. Presenters will discuss key components of simulation (prebriefing, experience, and debriefing), student performance, and reported increases in self-confidence using counseling techniques. Lessons learned and future considerations for interdisciplinary simulation design will be shared to support attendees in developing their own practical approaches.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the components of a well-developed healthcare simulation, including prebriefing, active participation, and debriefing.
  2. Identify and differentiate between various clinical simulation modalities and their application in SLP education.
  3. Apply entry-level counseling techniques within the context of simulated clinical interactions in Speech Language Pathology (SLP).
