Abstract:
The integration of haptic technologies into healthcare simulation is rapidly becoming essential for enhancing realism, advancing skill development, and improving clinical readiness. As part of the Society for Simulation in Healthcareโs (SSH) Future of Simulation Technology initiative, the Haptics Workgroup has convened since early 2024 to examine emerging trends, current capabilities, and future directions for haptic innovation in simulation-based education and training.
This CE webinar session will present key findings from the workgroup, including results from a national survey of simulation center professionals that explored the current use, perceived value, and future needs around haptic technologies. The presentation will also highlight a range of haptic tools in use today, summarize the supporting evidence, and identify common barriers to adoption, such as cost, integration challenges, and lack of standardization. Strategic recommendations will be offered to help healthcare simulation educators and operators evaluate and implement haptics more effectively within their own programs.
Whether you are just beginning to explore haptic tools or are the lead innovator in your simulation center, this session will provide practical insights, current data, and forward-looking recommendations for leveraging haptics to improve learner outcomes and patient care.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe the different types and techniques of haptics in simulation technology.
- Identify at least three current applications of haptic technology in healthcare simulation.
- Summarize two major barriers to the implementation of haptic tools in clinical simulation.
