Why do we treat non-sterile practice tubing as a single-use consumable?
By focusing on the mechanical utility of the tubing rather than the clinical protocol of “one and done,” we’ve found a way to make our simulation budget stretch for semesters.
Huge shoutout to Emily at CU Anschutz for the inspiration. In my center, I’ve refined the process…

Thank you, Elizabeth, for sharing this innovative approach. It’s inspiring to see how rethinking “single-use” assumptions in simulation can meaningfully reduce waste while maintaining educational quality. Initiatives like this really demonstrate how small operational changes can have significant environmental and financial impact. I am a PI for…

The suction is a great idea. Thank you for sharing Liz! I have also used a syringe to “blow” out the air in the line for reuse, and leave it to dry for a day before resealing it. In the past, I also have used old school sandwich or bread bags (without the zipper etc) with a heat sealer to create a sealed package to simulate opening a new bag.

Thank you for sharing, Elizabeth!! With healthcare contributing to a whopping 5 Billion Tons of waste annually, it is imperative that we do our part to help. I find it interesting many do not think about the impact simulation can have on mother nature! I know of a medical school that uses papayas for OBGYN skills, but doesn’t consider the waste…
