Abstract:

Civility and respect are essential components of safe, effective, and compassionate healthcare. Uncivil behaviors not only compromise team dynamics but also negatively impact patient outcomes. Healthcare education must intentionally address these challenges by equipping future professionals with cognitive rehearsal skills to navigate complex interactions while maintaining professionalism. Simulation-based learning provides a powerful platform for practicing respect, fostering empathy, and reinforcing constructive communication in realistic, high-stakes scenarios.

Through structured debriefing and guided reflection, learners can explore the consequences of incivility, practice respectful responses, and build confidence in applying these skills in clinical practice. By integrating clinical simulation into curricula, educators can create psychologically safe environments where learners develop the competencies necessary to promote a culture of civility in healthcare.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the impact of civility and incivility on work and learning environments.
  2. Identify strategies for integrating healthcare simulation scenarios that promote professional communication, respect, and psychological safety among participants.
  3. Apply best practices for using medical simulation to foster civility, enhance teamwork, and prepare for real-world challenges.
