Abstract:

Interruptions are an unavoidable reality in clinical practiceโ€”alarms sound, phones ring, colleagues and patients ask questions. Yet, interruptions are often lacking from healthcare simulation designs, creating missed opportunities for learners to experience these complexities of real-world practice. Research shows that interruptions cause competing demands and increase the risk of making errors. However, what may be less known is that the way an interruption is managed (i.e., handled) can increase or decrease error risks.

In this CE webinar, the presenters will discuss how simulation-based education can be used to prepare learners on how to manage interruptions. The speakers will discuss findings from a recent research study that utilized simulation to teach undergraduate nursing students the STAY SAFE interruption management strategy. The methods used to teach STAY SAFE and key details to consider when embedding interruptions into simulation design will be highlighted. Attendees will leave the webinar with practical examples that can be used in low, medium, or high fidelity simulation to prepare learners to be interruption-ready.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand patient safety risks due to interruptions to clinical providers.
  2. Describe key details to consider when embedding interruptions into healthcare simulation scenario designs.
  3. Create a plan to teach clinical simulation learners interruption management skills like those from the STAY SAFE method.

Meet the Presenter(s):

Ginger Schroers PhD, RN, CNE
Assistant Professor at Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing, Loyola University Chicago

Dr. Ginger Schroers is an Assistant Professor of Nursing at Loyola University Chicago and a Research Nurse at the Hines VA Hospital in Hines, Illinois. She completed her Bachelorโ€™s degree in Nursing from the University of Illinois Chicago and PhD in Nursing from Villanova University. Dr. Schroers is a Jonas Scholar alumna and a member of the National League for Nursing, Midwest Nursing Research Society, and Human Factors and Ergonomics Society. Her research focuses on interventions to improve healthcare quality and patient safety. She studies healthcare system issues, interruption science with an emphasis on interruption management, and educational methods used to teach nursing students and nurses. Currently, Dr. Schroers is leading a multi-site study funded by the National League for Nursing and the Illinois Nursing Foundation. The study utilizes simulation to investigate the deliberate practice teaching method with medication administration, handoff, and the Stay SAFE interruption management strategy. The Stay SAFE strategy aims to mitigate errors and improve the efficiency of interrupted work, and is being implemented in nursing education curricula and practice.
