Abstract:
Interruptions are an unavoidable reality in clinical practiceโalarms sound, phones ring, colleagues and patients ask questions. Yet, interruptions are often lacking from healthcare simulation designs, creating missed opportunities for learners to experience these complexities of real-world practice. Research shows that interruptions cause competing demands and increase the risk of making errors. However, what may be less known is that the way an interruption is managed (i.e., handled) can increase or decrease error risks.
In this CE webinar, the presenters will discuss how simulation-based education can be used to prepare learners on how to manage interruptions. The speakers will discuss findings from a recent research study that utilized simulation to teach undergraduate nursing students the STAY SAFE interruption management strategy. The methods used to teach STAY SAFE and key details to consider when embedding interruptions into simulation design will be highlighted. Attendees will leave the webinar with practical examples that can be used in low, medium, or high fidelity simulation to prepare learners to be interruption-ready.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand patient safety risks due to interruptions to clinical providers.
- Describe key details to consider when embedding interruptions into healthcare simulation scenario designs.
- Create a plan to teach clinical simulation learners interruption management skills like those from the STAY SAFE method.
