Abstract:

This CE presentation will introduce the revised INACSL Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice: Prebriefing standard, highlighting key updates, conceptual clarifications, and practical resources. The International Nursing Association for Clinical and Simulation Learning (INACSL) Standards Committee conducted a comprehensive systematic review of the Cornerstone Simulation Standards of Best Practice, including Prebriefing, Facilitation, Professional Integrity, and Debriefing (Persico, 2025). Prebriefing serves as a foundational component of simulation-based learning experiences (SBLEs), consisting of two distinct yet interrelated phases: preparation and briefing. These phases are crucial for fostering psychological safety, promoting learner engagement, and enhancing readiness for immersive learning.

Findings from the systematic review revealed persistent variability in how the Prebriefing standard is interpreted and operationalized. Specifically, inconsistencies were identified in defining, sequencing, and evaluating the preparation and briefing phases. The review also noted a lack of standardized tools to guide implementation across educational contexts.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Critically evaluate the findings from the INACSL nursing simulation organizationโ€™s systematic review of the Prebriefing standard.
  2. Examine current challenges and variations in Prebriefing implementation across healthcare simulation and nursing-simulation-based learning environments.
  3. Apply evidence-informed tools, including preparation and briefing checklists, to support standardized, high-quality Prebriefing practices in healthcare simulation.

Meet the Presenter(s):

Lori Persico PhD, RN, CHSE
Adjunct Professor at Molloy University

Dr. Persico has over twenty years of experience in simulation-based education for healthcare learners. Her dissertation, Comparison of Two Debriefing Methods for Nurse Orientation, advanced research in effective simulation pedagogy. In her role as Director of the Simulation Program for graduate and undergraduate nursing, she collaborated with faculty to design simulations aligned with learning outcomes. An active member of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) and the International Nursing Association for Clinical and Simulation Learning (INACSL), Dr. Persico serves as Chair of the Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice (HSSOBP). She leads the Prebriefing: Preparation and Briefing standard and contributes to the Facilitation standard. Her publications include collaborative work with simulation experts on the INACSL HSSOBP: Facilitation. In addition to her scholarly work, Dr. Persico has provided mentorship to emerging simulationists, guiding them in program design, assessment, evaluation, and the advancement of interprofessional education (IPE) through simulation-based methodologies.
