Alyssa Schroder

Alyssa Schroder received her MSN in Nursing Education in December 2013. She began her career in teaching at State Fair Community College in Sedalia, MO. At SFCC she taught both didactic and clinical courses before transitioning to the role of Nursing Informatics Coordinator. While in the Nursing Informatics role she worked with high-fidelity simulators, Standardized Participants, and multiple technology resources used to enhance the simulated clinical experience. Schroder is currently an RN Case Manager and Katy Trail Community Health.

Erin Carn-Bennett

Erin Carn-Bennett is a Simulation Nurse Educator for the Douglas Starship Simulation Programme in Auckland, New Zealand. Carn-Bennett has her Masters of Nursing and has an extensive nursing career within pediatric emergency and also nursing management. She is passionate about debriefing and all things simulation. Carn-Bennett is a member of the IPSS board of directors. Carn-Bennett is the lead host of the podcast Sim Nurse NZ.

Michelle Sherlin

Michelle Sherlin, RN, BSN, CHSE, is the full-time coordinator of the 18-bed simulation lab at the Holyoke Community College Center for Health Education and Simulation. She has patient simulation experience dating back to 2002 when she started healthcare simulation at a vocational school and progressed to implementing simulation activities for several area schools and health care facilities. Her background includes curriculum development at the high school and college levels. Sherlin has hosted patient simulation-related conferences and presented on a multitude of topics. She stays current in nursing practice by working as a staff nurse in the Emergency Department. Sherlin is a per diem educator for the same facility where she conducts patient simulation and teaches Advanced Cardiac Life Support. She also works for a community partnership at another local hospital. In that position, she implements a variety of programs to introduce students to various health care professions. She recently won the “Excellence in Clinical Simulation” award from Education Management Solutions.

Sandra Catalina Vanegas Ortiz

Dr. Catalina Vanegas Ortiz is a medical specialist in obstetrics and gynecology. She also has a master’s degree in medical education with an emphasis on public health. Dr. Vanegas is a professor of medicine faculty the University of La Sabana, and CEO and founder of Custom Praxis.

Kathy Sokol

Kathy Sokol lived most of her adult life in Florida before “retiring” to Las Vegas. She has been a registered nurse for over 30 years and a nurse educator since 2005. Kathy has a masters degree in nursing education and earned Master Instruction certification from Chamberlain University College of Nursing. She set up and managed simulation labs on several campuses throughout the country. Kathy  collaborated on a course called Sim 101 to educate faculty on how to enrich student learning through simulation. In 2016, Kathy and her team did a presentation at IMSH on how to efficiently open a sim lab while saving time and money. Kathy was initiated into Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society. She was a nominee for the Daisy Faculty Nurse Award. She has been published in RN Magazine, is a regular contributor on LinkedIn and has an adult learning page on Facebook. She is currently working on a book about change. Kathy lives in Las Vegas with her husband. She is a visiting professor at Chamberlain University College of Nursing.

Kirk Atkinson

Kirk Atkinson is a Navy Veteran with over 15 years of experience in medicine and healthcare simulation. He started his path in medicine as a Hospital Corpsman, and deployed to Afghanistan in 2010 with the 1st Medical Battalion. When back in the U.S., he was given the opportunity to help develop a medical simulation training platform for deploying medical units based on Camp Pendleton, California. After 1st Medical Bn, he was assigned to Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton, where he was the Training Site Faculty and Administrator for the BLS, ACLS, and PALS programs. He also became a TCCC and CLS instructor for forward deploying Corpsmen and Marines. After the Navy, he moved back to Texas where he was hired by the American Red Cross and an urgent care facility. Then an opportunity arose at UT Southwestern for a Simulation Educator/Simulation Operations Specialist. Atkinson currently works with a very talented team to deliver high-quality healthcare simulation to all of the UT Southwestern system.

Jeanne Carey

Jeanne Carey is the Director of Simulation at Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing in Dallas, Texas. She holds advanced certification as a simulation educator and has 10 years of experience in all aspects of simulation, including the development and implementation of new simulation-based learning activities, training of simulation facilitators, and recruitment and management of standardized patients. Carey and the LHSON Simulation Team created the Two-Heads-Are-Better-Than-One (2HeadsR>1) strategy for role assignment in simulation. She is active in several simulation organizations and currently serves as an INACSL Nurse Planner.
