Abstract:
Mental health nursing faces a critical shortage as healthcare needs 310,000 more psychiatric nurses in the US and Canada, yet nursing students consistently avoid this specialty due to anxiety and stigma. Traditional educational approaches lead to nurses who graduate with little experience treating patients with mental health conditions and inadequate preparation for clinical practice. In this CE Webinar presentation co-organized by UbiSim, join Dr. Sheri Howard, PhD, RN, CHSE on October 15 to explore her 2025 research that demonstrates how immersive mental health simulation, deployed before clinical exposure, is critical to interrupt the cycle where unprepared, anxious nursing students potentially have stressful clinical experiences that reinforce stigma and reduce interest in mental health nursing careers. Find out how Virtual Reality (VR) training helped to reduce student stigma by 32%!
Learning Objectives:
- Find out what reduced nursing student stigma of mental health patients by 32%.
- Learn how to equip students to encounter real patients with Virtual Reality nursing simulation training tools.
- Discuss whether mental health simulations belong earlier in the nursing educational sequence.
