Abstract:

Effective patient care hinges on seamless teamwork and communication among healthcare professionals. The presenter’s project explores how healthcare simulation-based interprofessional education (IPE) can strengthen collaboration between clinical disciplines by fostering mutual understanding and shared clinical decision-making.

To bridge gaps in interdisciplinary communication, the presenters developed a high-fidelity simulation experience featuring standardized patients, guided by the INACSL Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice. This initiative was also aligned with accreditation requirements set by the Council of Academic Accreditation (CAA) and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN). The clinical simulation brings together learners from both Speech-Language Pathology and Nursing programs to foster collaborative, real-world clinical practice.

The nursing simulation brought together students from both disciplines in a realistic clinical scenario, encouraging them to learn with, from, and about each other. The CE presentation will walk through the simulation design, implementation strategies, and outcomes, highlighting how structured IPE can break down traditional educational silos and elevate the quality of patient-centered care.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe strategies to successfully conduct interprofessional simulations that engage learners and coordinate interdisciplinary participation.
  2. Explain key elements involved in designing high fidelity, standards-based, interprofessional healthcare simulations, including the use of standardized patients and best practice guidelines.
  3. Evaluate learner outcomes and feedback data to assess the effectiveness of IPE simulations and recommend improvements for future implementations.

Meet the Presenter(s):
